In the last blog, we discussed different accommodation facilities that might work great for a digital nomad. Since there are plenty more options available, we wanted to list some more exciting types of accommodation that might suit your needs and budget. You don’t want to be spending most of your savings on accommodation. This is a real deal-breaker. You need a place to sleep that’s comfortable and safe. Ideally, it’s better to avoid too many or any indulging options if your plan is to stay for longer periods of time. Prioritize what’s important for you. First things first - identify your budget for the stay. And look for comfortable places to stay. You can avoid searching for an infinite number of options if you filter out your specification like price, area, facilities, etc.

It’s really crucial to reach out to fellow digital nomads over Facebook groups and other forums to understand and seek guidance about accommodation. Look into reviews written by fellow nomads and rule out all below-average options. There are a lot of scams out there and it’s important to do your due diligence before picking a place. It’s better to avoid places with few or no reviews at all. Always look out for recent reviews and look for red flags like cleanliness, scams, etc. We understand that accommodation costs are the largest expense for digital nomads hence it’s always best to look out for all options before you jump in. If the stay is for a short period of time, don’t break your head with too many overwhelming options.

Like our last blog, we are going to look into other options that are best suited for digital nomads.

Airbnb

Airbnbs are the easiest and also one of the most convenient options if you are looking for monthly stays. Another reason why Airbnb platforms are popular among digital nomads is because of the endless options you have. Also, one can get a great internet connection with Airbnbs. It’s always possible to know if you can access an internet connection before booking the stay. But there will always be exceptional regions where one cannot access the internet like glamping pods. One should take note that there is no community aspect when it comes to Airbnbs. A great feature of Airbnbs is that it will calculate your monthly costs and also give monthly discounts. For anyone looking for a month-long stay, Airbnbs are the best option. You can book leisure stays in nearby locations or in your chosen cities/ towns.

Couch Surfing

With Couchsurfing, you can stay with locals in any part of the world. You can travel like a local, stay in someone's home, and experience the world in a way money can't buy. ‘Couchsurfing is a global community of 14 million people in more than 200,000 cities who share their life, their world, and their journey.’ Couchsurfing connects travelers with a global network of people willing to share in profound and meaningful ways, making travel a truly social experience. You can browse locals with couches available. How Couchsurfing works is if you have a permanent home where you make space for other people to come and stay when they want to visit the local area, you build credit as a couchsurfer. Now, when you want to go travel the world, you can use this credit to stay in other couchsurfers’ homes for free and you’ll have someone who knows the place. The downside is that you need to spend a lot of time hosting other people before you can hit the road. And, you are not joining a group of people, just one person. So it all depends on your comfort level and needs.

Lodging

Websites and apps like Roomi and Diggz help you find people you are a good match with to share rooms. There are several websites like this that can help you find roommates. You can find out their habits, work situation, and other things to know if they are an ideal roommate for you. As a digital nomad, you are out of the house most time. It’s nice to feel at home and stay in a house that’s affordable. Many people rent a room in their house to digital nomads. The only issue would be you would be sharing your space with strangers. If you are cool about it and really want to make friends, this is a great and affordable option to look into.

Caravan

Camper life is the literal meaning of life on the road. If you are someone with no strings attached or any of that kinds of obligations, life on a caravan is the most liberating experience. Of course, you are more exposed to the world outside. You also need to figure out a steady travel internet services that do not put a halt to your work. But you must remember that it's limited to locations you can drive to. It’s not possible to travel from Japan to the United Kingdom on your van unless you are that reckless and adventurous! Also, basically, you are on your own, or if you’ve got a companion who shares the same dream, that works splendidly too. But Hey! If you are happy being a lone bird and want to take it one step at a time, maybe van life is for you. A lot of people are choosing vanlife, especially since international travel curtailed in the past few years due to the pandemic. You can rent a van for a week-long trip or even for a lifelong commitment.

House Swapping

House swapping is super cool. You are traveling the world and you are not going to use your home. So you let someone else live in your house. And by doing this, you save lots of money on your accommodation costs. But most digital nomads want to have a carefree time while being in another country. The thing with house swapping is that you are still responsible if there is some situation or urgency. Also, if you are looking to stay in an exotic location, you might not have a lot of options if it’s house swapping. Apps like lovehomeswap.com help you list your home and also help you connect with available houses you can stay in.

There are plenty of housing options. We have pretty much wrapped up almost everything with regard to housing options for digital nomads with the last blog as well as this one. Now, you can find your perfect destination without worrying about staying!
