We have all gone through a significant change during the pandemic. Our day-to-day lives went for a toss. Suddenly, work and home were difficult to differentiate. Companies came up with alternate policies to make employees more effective while they worked from their homes. Socializing became a virtual activity and most of us were confined to our homes for a very long period of time. All outdoor activities and entertainment programs came to standstill. While this phase was tough for most people, it also widened career opportunities for many people around the world. Many jobs were completely switched to hybrid or remote mode. This opened a pathway for people to work from anywhere in the world.

Any digital nomad would agree that finding an accommodation that suits them is not an easy task. Unlike backpackers or travelers, digital nomads need something that’s long-term yet sustainable and cheap. You are constantly moving from one place to another when you are a digital nomad. This can be for a short period of time or a long one depending on your needs. As a digital nomad, you are also looking for a place where you can cook your meals as eating out might not be the most economical option when you are staying in a place for quite some time. In this blog, we are going to guide you through different types of accommodation facilities that are pocket friendly and suitable for digital nomads.

Finding the Right Place

Since the trend in travel has changed over the past few years, there are various platforms offering accommodation services according to specific needs. As a digital nomad, do your research before fixing a place. You might be looking through marketplaces, groups, or other rental platforms. Make sure you go through several websites to find the best discounts and deals. Be certain of what you are looking for. The cost, the feel of the place, the proximity to important places - take into account all these factors before confirming a place. Remember that you are looking for at least a month of stay in a place and ask for monthly discounts for the stay. Most apartments or stays have monthly discounts. This could save up a lot of money while traveling. So look into those options. As you are working on the move, make sure you find a place with a great internet connection as well as a fully furnished space as this is important while you are staying temporarily. You should also consider if the stay is work-friendly.

Types of Accommodation

Rentals

The most common method is renting an apartment for a couple of months or a short period of time. Short-term apartments come with a lot of perks. If you are someone who does not want to compromise on your routines, having a stable place to stay while in a foreign place can be very soothing. Renting is one of the best options for a digital nomad. Short-term rentals can sometimes be expensive depending on the area and the kind of owners. But it sure is a cheaper option than hotels. You might feel a little isolated if you choose rentals and is a solo digital nomad. If you are a couple who is looking for great accommodation, this is a suitable option. You can find long-term, short-term, and mid-term rental spaces. Now the demand for this kind of short-term rental is increasing. If you are looking for the convenience of a cozy home, this might be the right choice for you.

Co-living Spaces

In the last blog, we discussed co-living spaces and their advantages for a digital nomad. As you know, this is a great choice for solo digital nomads as well as people who love socializing and are extroverts. You basically have your private space, a bedroom, and a bathroom, but you share a lot of common areas with the rest of the community of people who live with you. These places are thriving because it's greatly work-friendly. It’s an amazing concept for people who want to stay in a productive area as most co-living spaces are also meant for co-working. There are various websites that help you find these co-living stays in different countries like NomadList and NomadStays. There are also a lot of online groups for digital nomads that help you find co-living spaces.

Hostels

If like-minded fellow travelers bring you joy, if meeting people from different parts of the world excites you, hostel is where you got to start digging. The cheapest option for any traveler, hostels are enhancing their features to become more nomad friendly these days. Zostel is a great choice for many today as they come with great features that make you fall in love with hostel stays. If budget is your biggest concern, find a great hostel you could stay in. There are many digital nomad groups that will help you find the type of place you are looking for. Most of these hostels also host fun activities that help you experience your destination with other like-minded people. If you are a backpacker on a budget and you are keen to meet people, find these affordable hostels and read about them before making bookings. Always do your research.

Hotels

Hotels are not the most preferred choice for a digital nomad who is planning a long stay because of the expenses. Hotels are expensive but it’s the most widely available and easiest option the first time you are moving to a foreign place. But most people prefer hotels for a very short term, probably a week or so. It’s not budget friendly and it's not the best option if you prefer cooking or meeting people etc. But if you are probably traveling and need to stay put in a place for a couple of days, a hotel is the most convenient option and you would have a lot of preferences.

These are some of the most common options for a digital nomad who is searching for accommodation. We are going to look into more unique options in the upcoming blog.
