Becoming a Digital Nomad - Chapter 1

Authors

Breaking free from the constraints of the physical workplace - is the DREAM of everyone these days. Technology has empowered this dream for millions of people around the world and continues to nurture many folks to live a life of adventure with just a laptop and an internet connection. A lot of people wonder how digital nomads make money. The nature of work has taken a steep curve after the pandemic. There is no dearth of “ work from anywhere” jobs. More and more jobs can be performed remotely online. There is a definite upward trend in digital nomadic and freelancing projects across the world. The nature of work also matters. Are you a freelancer, consultant, remote employee, intern, or someone who owns a business?

Digital Nomads can work from anywhere provided there is good Wi-Fi. It’s the holy grail of any remote worker. A lot of aspects also have to be taken into account while working remotely: safety, affordability, visa, recreational opportunities and options etc. There are plenty of websites offering resource tools for places for travel. The Nomad List is one among them. It is a global community of remote workers living and travelling around the world. This platform allows users to search cities using a set of definite filters. It was created by a Dutch Nomad and entrepreneur Pieter Levels. Platforms like these host meet-ups for digital nomads to connect, collaborate, network and make friends.

One of the biggest hurdles of location independent jobs is figuring out how you are going to earn money. It all depends on what you can bring to the table – your skillset, experience, and networks that will fetch you, clients. There is no one way of doing it right, no single blueprint to earn money or figure out the whole process. Many times, the reality of remote work can be much less glamorous than what’s seen on online platforms. Remote work is not always sitting by the beach with your laptop sipping on your refreshing coconut water. It’s sometimes about tracking unknown places in the middle of the night when your car breaks down or figuring out good enough cafes with decent Wi-Fi.

While some of us have to give in an extra little legwork to understand the nuances of remote work, others might be able to skip a few steps as they have a better set of skills and varying degrees of professional or career experience. The goal is to have the true freedom to travel around and have the freedom to work from anywhere across the globe. There are a plethora of resources available on platforms built for digital nomad communities. There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to travelling and working remotely. If you are looking for somewhere to begin, joining Facebook groups or online forums makes it easy to contact other like-minded digital nomads who can advise you.
