Anyone who lives a "nomadic lifestyle" or works remotely while travelling is called a "digital nomad." Therefore, we can also refer to it as a digital nomad lifestyle. Nomads work while they are travelling, at coworking spaces, or in a quiet spot where they can concentrate, and they use the balance of their trip time to relax. Digital nomads are more prevalent now that remote working is so commonly accepted. This led to an increase in opportunities as well. For example, you may now have: Digital nomad visas to eliminate the hassle of obtaining a new visa before each trip.
When it comes to essentials needed for travel, there is a variety of lightweight, sturdy, and small digital nomad gear available.
If you are a person who stresses travel packing, you have to keep reading. As a digital nomad, the key is to value the important things in life. We have made this brief blog post about travel must-haves that every digital nomad should carry with them on their journeys. We want to make your lives easier and more enjoyable while travelling.
There are a few obstacles and needs for digital nomads. When it comes to packing, the weight you can carry at once matters, the size of your backpacks matters, and your clothing and its sustainability and durability matter. Also one needs to carry clothing according to the weather conditions of a place but you can never be prepared for surprises when it comes to climatic conditions. So how can someone anticipate what are the necessities that you need to carry while also being prepared for anything?
Basic things always include toiletries and hygiene supplies like soap, deodorant, sanitisers, sunscreen lotion, band-aids, septic creams etc. Also, prioritise what is your necessity and what’s not. In this way, you can save a lot of space while packing. When it comes to clothing, always consider your destination, and do your research to pick clothes that suit the weather of the destination. Consider what kind of activities you would like to do while in that country. Would you be going hiking? Or would you be more on a beach? It’s always important to carry a good pair of sneakers, shades, raincoats, jackets, gloves, socks, shaving sets, moisturizer etc. while deciding to travel.
Do not carry a lot of luggage. Try to limit your essentials to a good enough backpack or suitcase. And take extra care if you are having tech gear or expensive gadgets. Try to be sustainable on the go as well. Carry stainless steel bottles instead of plastic and try to carry as many reusable essentials so that you don’t have to constantly buy items from a different country. Do not overload yourself with heavy objects. Instead, try to keep things as light as possible.
Some of the most crucial components of travel include:
Luggage
Organisers
Reusable Water Bottles
Waterproof backpacks and organisers
Headlamp
Padlock
Powerbanks / Portable Chargers
Noise Cancelling Headphones
Tech/ Laptop Bag
Mobile Phone and Camera
External Hard Drive
USB Cables
Important Documents
Digital nomads should carry their technical equipment, clothes, self-care items, bags, and travel equipment before they start their journey. In order to work remotely, you would need to carry your laptop, safety items, portable hard drives, batteries, cables and plugs. Say if you are travelling for a long time, split your luggage into halves. One part is for clothing and the other for your digital gadgets.
It’s great to store everything in the cloud. But if you are someone who deals with a lot of content or data of any kind, it’s important to have some form of physical storage backup. Make sure you get good quality hard drives while travelling. You do not want to lose your data. So do not buy cheap hard drives. Either make sure to purchase a cloud storage plan or have an SSD and hard drive or both.
When you are working remotely, you will need to carry a lot of cables with you— charging cables, USB cables, USB adapters, aux cords etc. If you do not organise them, half of your time will be wasted untangling them every day and moreover, this will clearly spoil the cables in the long run. It’s essential to own a good cable organiser that keeps your wires in a proper space without getting tangled or damaged. This not only saves time but also helps you in keeping your things in a designated place without losing them.
Another issue a digital nomad might face is a power surge. This can sometimes cause damage to your gadgets if they are plugged in. Sometimes it affects the lifespan of your devices or sometimes it’s the worst you can expect - severe damage beyond repair. It’s important to carry a surge protector with you. If you plug this into the mains, you can protect your devices from getting damaged. Probably this is not something everyone might consider or think of first while packing essentials, but this is in fact very crucial.
If you are someone who might travel internationally more often as a digital nomad, we recommend you get an international travel adaptor. A lot of cheap options are available in the market but do not fall for that. Always pick something that’s trustworthy.
Also, carry a good noise-cancelling headset if you are planning to work on the go. These prevent external sounds from interfering with the sound quality. It can also block sounds while you sleep.
If you are an avid reader, having a Kindle is handy. Books are heavy to carry especially when you have so many essentials to carry and also they take up a lot of space. An e-reader like Kindle will help you save space and help you travel light. If you are a digital nomad who also happens to be a bookworm, Kindle is the best option. Also, it comes with a wide range of reading materials. Surely, it is an essential gear for any digital nomad who loves reading.
Get packing cubes. This maximises your space in luggage. So this is a must on the digital nomad list. It helps you keep things organised and also compresses them to keep them clean.
These are just a few of the things you need to keep note of when it comes to travel and packing. We have more tips for you in our upcoming blogs!
Keep reading and Happy Backpacking!
